W2k3 enterprise license key
I'd rather have the latest features than go with our original release version and not be able to get the R2 stuff. Might as well use and buy the R2 version up front. I decided to pull this to the front instead of start a new thread since I am currently at bullet point 2 in my OP. I want to be sure I have the process down before I do, though. I am experimenting on a virtual machine I setup. I tried to set it up just like our regular R2 Enterprise machine.
I installed the evaluation and all the updates and even SQL since that's fast and easy enough. I started the upgrade process after logging into Windows. I put the R2 retail CD in and started the upgrade process. So far so good, but I did hit a phase where it said I need to reinstall all of my hotfixes and patches for windows or something. Yowzah--wasn't aware I would have to do that.
Anyway, I guess I can handle that. I won't possibly see any other issues--such as things fouled up with my SQL server or other things changed, will I? If I'm going about this wrong, please tell me. I want to be certain I do this right as our company depends on this server and I have to get this done this week--not over a weekend when I have more time. Long time lurker. To perform the install, you will need an R2 product key. You said that you have a W2K3 Enterprise media with key, this won't work by itself, when you try to install R2 on top of this, it will ask for an R2 Enterprise product key. The only way to get an R2 Product key for most people is to purchase a new license for Windows Server If you are under a couple of the special MS support contracts, you will get the keys gratis I believe, but regular Joe Q will need to buy a whole new Windows Server license.
The best method of install is to install W2K3 Enterprise with the R2 product key. Like you have already noticed, you can upgrade trial software to the 'real deal' without doing a total re-install. You will want to try this in a virtual or test environment first though as all patches will have to be reinstalled.
